Got into wood engraving at Central School of Art and Design way back in the early 1980s. We did lithography (on huge chunks of limestone!) and silk screen printing but it was wood engraving that got me. I think the love of wood is from my late dad who was a wonderful carpenter (cheers Dad!). And there is still something fascinating about printing – will it work, is there enough/too much ink, enough pressure on the press, etc…
I print on an old screw-down nippin press that I bought from a bloke in west London. My brother Dave, an engineer, got it resurfaced for me so it works a treat. Chasses, quoins, press furniture I bought from an old jobbing, printer in Newmarket who had a complete letterpress outfit in his shed in the garden. He was retiring so was pleased to be getting rid of it all.
Wood, paper and inks I get from TN Lawrence in Hove. Wonderful people. Old Man Lawrence used to have a shop up three flights of wooden stairs above Bleeding Heart Yard in Hatton Garden, going there was like stepping back into Dickensian London. He (Old Mr Lawrence) once threw me out of his shop for asking stupid questions … I also get wood blocks from Chris Daunt who is one of the very few blockmakers left.
If you want to buy any of these prints then please get in touch. Prices range from £25 to £55 (mounted not framed). I can frame them for an extra £35. (I suppose I’d better charge postage and packing on top of that). There’s a contact page at the top …
I want to thank the wonderful (and extremely patient) Bev Maydon who helped me build this website. Thanks Bev!
